Die „Icon of the Seas“ ist das größte Kreuzfahrtschiff der Welt und gehört der US-amerikanischen Reederei Royal Caribbean International. Es wurde von der Werft Meyer Turku in Finnland, gebaut und im November 2023 übergeben. Das Schiff ging im Januar 2024 in Betrieb. Als Typschiff der Icon-Klasse mit einer Länge von 365 Metern und einer Vermessung von 248.663 BRZ löste es die „Wonder of the Seas“ als größtes Kreuzfahrtschiff der Welt ab.
Die „Icon of the Seas“ zeichnet sich durch ihre innovative Ausstattung und ihren umweltfreundlicheren Antrieb aus. Sie wird von drei Dual-Fuel-Dieselmotoren angetrieben, die sowohl mit Schweröl als auch mit Flüssigerdgas (LNG) betrieben werden können, was zu geringeren Emissionen führt. Das Schiff verfügt über Brennstoffzellen und eine Luftschmierung, um die Umweltbelastung weiter zu reduzieren.
Trotz dieser Bemühungen um Umweltfreundlichkeit steht der Einsatz von LNG in der Schifffahrt in der Kritik. Experten argumentieren, dass LNG zu 120 Prozent mehr Lebenszyklus-Treibhausgasemissionen führen kann als Marinedieselöl, insbesondere aufgrund der Freisetzung von Methan, einem potenten Treibhausgas.
Die „Icon of the Seas“ wurde am 28. November 2023 an Royal Caribbean übergeben und startete ihre Jungfernfahrt am 27. Januar 2024 von Miami aus in die Karibik. Die Taufe des Schiffs erfolgte durch Lionel Messi am 23. Januar 2024.
